Light and Shadow: Artemisia Gentileschi

Home > Concert Hall > Light and Shadow: Artemisia Gentileschi

Event Information

A new show from ARTEK celebrates the renowned artist, Artemisia Gentileschi, one of the most colorful and talented artists of the Italian baroque era, with works now in major museums. Gentileschi’s life was more dramatic than an Italian opera: trained in art by her father, raped by another artist as a teenager, she became the lover of a Florentine nobleman and a painter at the English royal courts. Her dramatic depiction of Judith Beheading Holofernes has become one of the icons of baroque art.
Renowned opera librettist and theater playwright Nahma Sandrow created the script, and the remarkable singer/actress Sarah Chalfy interprets the role of Artemisia and sings arias by Barbara Strozzi and Francesco Cavalli, accompanied by music director Gwendolyn Toth on harpsichord. Stage director Paul Peers.

“The most enchanting opera/play … Artemisia is, by turns, joyful, tragic, woebegone … She sings of fate and destiny and, as she did so i was moved, included, inspired, comforted.”
—Phyllis Chesler, a legendary feminist leader.
